Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty or surgery of the nose is one of the most common elective procedures of the face performed today. Many reasons are behind a patients’ motivation to seek corrective surgery of their nose. The nose is also one of the most prominent features and often times the distinguishing characteristic of your face.  Deformities of the nose may stem from a familial predisposition, the result of trauma, or even prior surgery.

There is no such thing as an “ideal nose” and certainly no one nose fits all patients.

Several factors enter into the evaluation of your nose prior to undertaking aesthetic improvement.  The size of your face, your ethnic background, the thickness of your skin, and even your age are all factors which have a bearing on what nose is best suited for you.

Often times, patients who present for evaluation of an external nasal deformity also have difficulty with the function of their noses and complain of chronic nasal congestion.  A thorough intranasal evaluation is generally performed to determine what type of surgery will be necessary to improve the airway.  Improvement of the nasal airway may be fairly straightforward and necessitate straightening the septum or reducing the turbinates or may be more involved and require reconstruction of the internal and external nasal valves or nostrils.  Although cosmetic surgery of the nose is generally not covered by insurance, corrective surgery of the nasal airway often times is.  If you have an intranasal deformity which adversely affects your ability to breath, corrective surgery of the intranasal airway may be performed in conjunction with your rhinoplasty which may reduce your cost for the procedure.  Our experienced staff will work closely with you and your insurance provider to determine the cost of the procedure which you will be responsible for.

  Procedure

Rhinoplastic surgery is carried out under local or general anesthesia.  The procedure generally takes between two and three hours depending upon the deformity with which you present and the complexity of your particular case.  Incisions for rhinoplasty are primarily made inside the nose but will frequently require a small incision in the skin between your nostrils, the columella.  Any external nasal incisions created heal with little if any visible scarring.  Your surgeon will sculpt the bones, cartilage, and soft tissue of the nose in order to create the desired new shape and function of your nose.

Postoperatively you will have intranasal splints placed to ensure proper healing of the inside of the nasal airway but packing is usually not required.  An external nasal splint and nasal taping will also be present to maintain the proper position of the nose and to help reduce postoperative swelling.

The amount of swelling and discomfort you will experience is somewhat variable.   By following the detailed postoperative instructions you will be given prior to your surgery, your recovery will be a smooth one. Sutures and nasal splints will be removed at your first postoperative visit usually on day six or seven.

On your first postoperative visit your nose may appear swollen and with perhaps a bit more tip elevation than you had anticipated.  There is no need for concern.  Total resolution of swelling and edema following rhinoplastic surgery is a lengthy process.  You can expect to look quite good within three weeks following your surgery, but your final result will not be realized until six months to up to one year after your surgery.
